The Northern Territory Police Association
A brief history - page 3
A log of claims submitted in April 1960 resulted in significant increases in police salaries. In addition, in 1960 the Prison Officers' Association proposed a merger with the Police Association, a move that was rejected by the executive of the Police Association.
Unfortunately Cyclone Tracy resulted in the loss of a number of records, which hampers research of the years between 1960 and 1974.
Since 1974 much of the Associations activities have been directed towards providing a professional service to members. Significant milestones in our recent history include the appointment in 1979 of our first full time employee and our incorporation. In 1986 the purchase of our own premises at Lindsay Street culminating in our purchase of the current site at Foelsche Street. The "old" Foelsche Street premises being demolished and replaced in 2004.
In 1996 the constitution was changed to permit Commissioned Officers to join our Association. In 2004 the constitution was amended making the elected President a full time employee of our Association bringing our Association in line with every Australian Police Association and Union.
Industrial Relations and welfare services continue to be priorities, however, professional development, or perhaps more correctly, development of the Policing profession, is an important aspect of our business.
Our Association is also part of the Police Federation of Australia which with the increasing power of the Federal government in modern Australia is developing as the only national representative industrial voice for professional police officers.
Much hard work, and in some cases, intangible sacrifices, went into the creation and growing of the Northern Territory Police Association. These contributions were made, and continue to he made by the members and their families. Our Life Members are representatives of the many who have served the Association: Alex Carolan, Steve Wallace, Max Hill, Gowan, Carter, Anne- Marie Murphy, Bruce Sandry, Shaun O'Sullivan, Jack Clifford's (awarded posthumously) and Andy Smith.
