The Northern Territory Police Association (NTPA) is urgently calling for enhanced police powers and tactical options to address the escalating threat posed by hostile vehicles, following a series of dangerous incidents involving stolen cars.
These incidents have seen vehicles ramming police cars and driving directly at officers, heightening concerns for officer and public safety.
NTPA President Nathan Finn warned that it is only a matter of time before an officer is killed if immediate action is not taken and urged the Northern Territory Police Force Executive to accelerate the introduction of vital new measures, including tactical vehicle interdiction, to better equip officers in these high-risk situations.
“These reckless actions by criminal offenders are becoming more frequent and more dangerous. At present, our officers are restricted by outdated policies and procedures that limit their ability to stop these hostile vehicles in a timely manner, our members deserve better tactical options to be available,” said Finn.
“For months, the NTPA has been advocating for the implementation of more robust tactical measures to safely and effectively handle these escalating threats. Unfortunately, despite our repeated calls, no progress has been made."
President Finn said that ensuring the safety of both officers and the public must be the highest priority.
“Our members deserve the tools and training necessary to respond effectively. We cannot afford to wait for a tragedy to occur. The introduction of new tactical options, along with enhanced training, is critical to ensuring the safety of everyone in the community. Innocent lives are at risk and could be lost if we do not act now."
The NTPA is calling on the Northern Territory Police Force Executive to act swiftly to introduce these crucial measures and ensure that officers are equipped with the resources they need to prevent further dangerous incidents and protect lives.
“We can no longer afford to delay. These measures must be implemented now.”
